All you need to know about Maca

What is Maca root?

Maca root, otherwise known as Peruvian ginseng, is a plant that is sourced from the Andes region of central Peru. It grows at very high altitudes in extreme weather conditions, and is related to the brassica family (including cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower). It is dried out and turned into a powder supplement with an earthy and nutty flavour. It is commonly added to smoothies and drinks, or sprinkled into food. It is suggested that Maca root can boost sex drive and fertility.

What are the benefits of Maca root?

Maca root contains several important vitamins and nutrients that are essential for everyday health, including high levels of Vitamin C, copper and iron. It is also high in fibre and low in fat, and is popular with people consuming low-fat diets. Research has found that Maca root boosts libido in both women and men, with those taking it reporting increased sexual desire up to 6 weeks after consumption. It can also boost sperm quality and sperm production in men, boosting fertility. In women going through the menopause, Maca root has been found to ease hot flush symptoms and problems sleeping.

What's the best way to take Maca root?

Maca root powder has been described as having a nutty, malty caramel flavour that is slightly earthy. This makes it ideal for mixing into unbaked cakes and cookies, cereals, porridge, smoothies and other warm beverages like hot cocoa.

How much Maca root should I be taking?

It is best to start with small amounts of Maca powder (around half a teaspoon) a day, and then build up gradually to no more than one tablespoon a day, depending on your BMI. As Maca root is a supplement and superfood, it should be used in moderation. If taken daily, it is recommended that you take two days off per week. Always consult your GP before taking supplements like Maca root.
