What can I do to keep my child safe from the sun?
As well as investing in a high-factor sunscreen that contains SPF 50, you should try to minimise your child's exposure to the sun during the hottest parts of the day (between 11am and 3pm), when they are more likely to be at risk of sunburn and skin damage. Seek shade whenever you do go out for something like a picnic, and if trees are not available to sit underneath, bring umbrellas or a play tent for the kids to sit in so they are protected from the sun.
When should I apply my kids' sunscreen?
You should apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes before your children start playing in the sun, as this is how long it takes for the formula to activate on the skin. If your kids wriggle and make it difficult to apply, don't worry so much about rubbing it in, as it will still work effectively, even if it sits on top of the skin – just make sure to apply it evenly.
What should I look for in children's sunscreen?
You should look for the term 'broad spectrum', as this means the sunscreen has UVA and UVB protection, which means that it will protect against sunburn and skin cell damage. Organic products are not always the most effective, but if you are concerned about chemicals and sensitive skin, opt for a sensitive formula. Your sunscreen should have at least SPF 30 in it for it to be effective.
My child plays in the water a lot – will they need a waterproof sunscreen?
Yes – but remember that sunscreen isn't strictly waterproof and that it may come off easily – especially in chlorinated pools, so you will need to reapply it when they get out of the water.
